Tech : Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'The U.S. will lose its leadership in technology if this doesn't change' (AAPL)

Apple CEO Tim Cook takes a selfie with Auburn students.
Cook discussed diversity, the issues facing gay people, and engineering education in an exclusive interview with the Auburn Plainsman's Corey Williams published on Thursday.
From the article:
Tim Cook is "disturbed, however, by gender disparities in science, technology, engineering and math careers. Not just at Auburn, but throughout the country.
'I think the U.S. will lose its leadership in technology if this doesn’t change,' Cook said. 'Women are such an important part of the workforce. If STEM-related fields continue to have this low representation of women, then there just will not be enough innovation in the United States. That’s just the simple fact of it.'"
Cook added that he believes job growth for engineers and scientists will "outpace all others by a fair amount for the foreseeable future."
According to Apple's annual diversity report, 32% of current Apple employees and 37% of new hires are women. However, only 23% of employees in technical roles are women.
Recently, some shareholders have put pressure on the company to do more to ensure more minorities are represented on Apple's board and among Apple's executives.
The entire interview over at the Auburn Plainsman is fantastic and worth a read.

Syria : Four children among nine civilians dead in US strike: state media

Image released by the US Navy shows the USS Porter launching cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase from the Mediterranean early on April 7, 2017

A US missile strike targeting an airbase in central Syria killed nine civilians, including four children, on Friday, state news agency SANA reported.

The news agency said five of the civilians, among them three children, were killed in the village of Shayrat just outside the base of the same name.
"An American missile also hit the village of Al-Hamrat, which killed four civilians including a child," it added.
"Another seven civilians were wounded when a missile hit homes in Al-Manzul, four kilometres (two and a half miles) away from the Shayrat air base," it added.
Washington said it fired a barrage of 59 cruise missiles at the Shayrat base in response to what President Donald Trump called a "barbaric" chemical attack on a rebel-held town on Tuesday that he blamed on the Damascus regime.
The Pentagon said it believed the aircraft that carried out the deadly attack on Khan Sheikhun came from the Shayrat base.
US officials said Russian commanders in Syria were informed of the strike beforehand in order to avoid casualties that could prompt a broader crisis.
The Syrian army had said earlier that six people were killed in the strike on the base -- the first time that the US has directly attacked the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

"God willing, these strikes will be a clear warning to (President) Bashar al-Assad, to tell him: Bashar, enough killing and injustice against these people," he told AFP.
The attack ordered by President Donald Trump was the first direct US military action against Syria's government since the conflict began six years ago.

My fellow Americans, on Tuesday, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad launched a horrible chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians. North Korean president Kim Jong Un spent £2.7 million on sexy underwear for group of girls who entertain him and his officials

News emanating from North Korea has it that president Kim Jong Un spent £2.7million on racy lingerie for his pleasure Squad, a group of young girls picked as virgins who provide entertainment for him and his officials. The dictator imported suspenders and corsets among his huge haul from China, which is more than double the figure he spent last year. The girls - some of whom are as young as 13 - are taken from classrooms and subjected to medical tests to check that they are virgins, before being forced into a life of sexual servitude.
Reports also have it that the portly dictator is also squandering millions on Champagne, horses, fines wines, chocolate and Swiss cheese and make-up while his people are struggling to make ends meet. According to the UN, 2 million North Koreans struggle to survive on the meagre rations they receive from the government.

It says the daily allowance is 650 grams of maize, rice and meat. Kim's spending is hardly unprecedented.

Last year, he blew £33million on vain statues of himself, his father Kim Jong-il and grandfather Kim il-Sung last year. According to figures from, an International Trade Centre Map, he also signed off imports worth £5.5m from German firms in 2015, including £235,000 on spirits, £113,000 on wines and Champagne and £56,500 on German bear. Another £57,229 went on watches from Switzerland, £66,882 on imported cheeses, £251,726 on fishing rods from China and £132,452 on horses from Russia.

The bizarre list of imports included £1.65m worth of umbrellas from China, £8.03m on pepper and £2.34m on gym equipment.
